How to calculate Instagram engagement rate
  1. 01

    Pick a few recent posts

Use your last 5 to 10 posts or Reels. Add up likes, comments, shares and saves, then divide each total by the number of posts to get averages.

  2. 02

    Enter your numbers

Type your follower count and the per-post averages. Add average reach from Instagram Insights if you have it.

  3. 03

    Read both rates

Rate by followers is the classic number brands ask for. Rate by reach tells you how well a post landed with the people who actually saw it.

About this tool

The engagement rate formula

Engagement rate by followers = (likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ followers × 100. Engagement rate by reach = the same interactions ÷ accounts reached × 100. Use per-post averages so one viral post does not distort the number.

Why rate by reach matters for Reels

Reels are shown to many people who do not follow you. A Reel with 50,000 plays on an account with 2,000 followers can show a huge rate by followers and still be average by reach. Reporting both keeps the number honest.

How to raise it

Hook viewers in the first second, post consistently in one niche, end with a clear reason to comment or save, and reply to comments in the first hour. Saves and shares tend to reflect real value better than likes do.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate engagement rate on Instagram?

Add likes, comments, shares and saves on a post, divide by your follower count, then multiply by 100. For a fairer picture, average several recent posts, and also divide by reach to see how people who saw the post responded.

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?

It depends heavily on account size and niche, and published benchmarks from different analytics companies vary. Smaller accounts usually see higher rates than large ones. The most useful comparison is your own rate over time and against similar accounts in your niche.

Should I count saves and shares?

Yes. Saves and shares are strong signals that a post was useful or worth passing on. Many older calculators only count likes and comments, which undercounts accounts that post educational or reference content.

Where do I find reach on Instagram?

Switch to a professional (creator or business) account, open a post or Reel, and tap View insights. Reach shows how many unique accounts saw it.

Is my data stored?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing is sent to FacelessGenie.
